TGIF : Olympics-London 2012 – A Reflection
August 5, 2012: BADMINTON: Lee Chong Wei vs Lin Dan
The big question was, “ Who Should I Support? ”
Usually my support would be based on whom I
think should win the GOLD medal. As the combatants were warming up, the
cameras focused on LCW’s shimmering rings and a gold chain round his
neck. LD was also adorned, but not with gold, silver or diamond but with
a huge tattooed cross on his left arm. It was NOT a tattoo that was
decorative, colorful or fancy, but just a big splash of a black cross.
Thus i threw my weight behind LD and LD eventually won this epic battle.
LD must have mastered the Art Of War as he is a master tactician and
strategist especially when the chips are down. He has become a real
master swordsman of badminton especially during delicate situations of
the game. Lin Dan's relief and celebration after the game was a genuine
tribute to LCW as an equal. LD is a two-time Olympic champion, four-time
world champion, and five-time All England champion. For me, Lin Dan IS a
Champion.
However there were many nasty people out there with a herd mentality joining in the demeaning comments that LD is arrogant etc, making LD out to be a villain without any basis for their nasty comments. LD is an excellent player and deserves the gold medal and he has the right to celebrate and he has the right to be proud of his achievement. We have failed to recognize excellence because of our own arrogance and pride. We have degenerated into a nation that is always celebrating a looser and when we have nothing much to say about the loser we start condemning the winner in order to boost the image of the loser.
For me Lin Dan was a worthy champion and has become China’s national hero. His only equal in Malaysia, and who is currently on Top Of The World is our squash queen Nicol David, a truly Malaysian Hero. She is a 6 time World champion with 56 World Tour titles and who is the only person to have been inducted into the World Squash Federation Hall of Fame. Nicol David has also been appointed as UNDP National Goodwill Ambassador for Malaysia. She is a true champion but hardly in the limelight as Malaysia is only known for celebrating loosers. For me Usain Bolt, Lin Dan & Nicol David are the top guns in the world of sports.
Lets face it. Not every Malaysia rooting for LCW was doing it because he/she is a patriot. It was obvious that the BN-MCA-PKR propaganda machinery were on over-drive using LCW to milk the Chinese votes for GE13.
OOPS!! Since the weekend is here, most of us will again be visiting our respective house of worship.Whilst we glorify God for all that He has done for us, let us not forget to thank God for giving Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, Nicol David and Usain Bolt the talent which they shared with us.
